Our Mission: Transparent Retirement Math for Everyday People
NPVCALC (npvcalc.link) was created to solve a widespread problem facing employees with defined benefit pensions: a complete lack of transparent, accessible financial tools when faced with life-altering retirement decisions.
Whether you participate in a corporate pension plan, a federal system like FERS or CSRS, or a state retirement plan like CalSTRS, CalPERS, or TRS, receiving a lump-sum buyout offer is intimidating. Employers typically provide dozens of pages of legal paperwork, but very little objective analysis showing what your monthly checks are actually worth in today's dollars.
Our mission is to provide an independent, free, and conflict-free educational calculator that allows everyday workers, retirees, and financial planners to calculate Net Present Value (NPV), identify breakeven ages, and compare lifetime income options without hidden agendas or commercial bias.
Who Runs NPVCALC
NPVCALC is maintained by the NPVCALC Team, an independent group of quantitative finance enthusiasts, software developers, and personal finance educators. We are passionate about financial literacy, open-source web technologies, and making complex capital budgeting math accessible to all.
Because we are completely independent:
- We do not sell annuities, life insurance policies, or investment management products.
- We do not collect referral commissions or lead-generation bounties from financial institutions.
- We do not give individualized financial advice; our tools are strictly educational modeling aids.
How the Calculator Works
Our primary tool computes the Net Present Value (NPV) of a future stream of monthly pension payments using the standard discrete discounting formula from corporate finance:
NPV = ∑ [ P_m × (1 + g)^(floor(m/12)) / (1 + r/12)^m ] - Upfront Offer
Key mechanics of our calculator include:
- 100% Client-Side Execution: All mathematical computations run entirely inside your browser using vanilla JavaScript. None of your salary figures, benefit numbers, or personal ages are ever sent to our servers or stored in any database.
- User-Configurable Assumptions: Rather than forcing hidden assumptions, our calculator puts you in control. You can adjust the discount rate (hurdle rate), Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLA), life expectancy, and effective tax rates to see how sensitive your valuation is to market conditions.
- Side-by-Side Comparisons: The tool instantly models cumulative cash flows, after-tax net values, and your actuarial breakeven age to help you evaluate employer buyout offers objectively.
Our Commitment to Editorial Integrity & Reporting Errors
We strive for total accuracy in all of our articles, guides, and calculations. Every formula and educational guide is written with clarity and grounded in standard financial mathematics.
